TESTBED

Automated HF Propagation Testbed

An automated HF propagation testbed designed to provide continuous data across a range of use cases — from scientific propagation characterization to sustained operational validation of allocated spectrum.

Scope

End-to-end site design: RF architecture, antenna design, ground-plane engineering, coax and grounding, DC power, site layout, and the research and sourcing of specialized components — Kaizen does the work to identify the best hardware for each system's mission, not just what's convenient. Multi-site coverage across the continental US, with the network scaling as new sites come online.

System

API-driven radios controlled by headless Linux site controllers. Sites operate independently, share a common time reference and configuration, and coordinate frequency selection without requiring real-time links between them. Every measurement is logged locally and forwarded through a cloud-side data pipeline.

Output

Thousands of data points produced daily, characterizing measured propagation across the HF spectrum. The pipeline is consumed by downstream analysis and visualization tooling, and the system as deployed serves both scientific and operational stakeholders.

NETWORK

Multi-Site Network Operations Center

A multi-site, multi-radio HF network with emergency response and emergency watch capability. Each site is engineered for continuous unattended operation and independent survivability.

Architecture

Each site carries multiple roles across multiple radios — active sounding, response capability, and continuous monitoring. The network operates as a mesh rather than a hub-and-spoke, with each site fully functional on its own if regional connectivity is lost.

Operational Visualization

An interactive globe visualization and network operations page present all network sites, their operational status, and their modeled coverage in real time. The visualization serves as the primary operator interface and as a stakeholder-facing demonstration surface.

Continuous Watch

Dedicated Scanner-role radios provide multi-slice simultaneous monitoring across allocated emergency and watch frequencies, with signal-of-interest detection and structured logging feeding a live operator dashboard. Detections trigger mobile paging to on-call operators, and the primary radio can initiate a response transmission from the same site — closing the loop from detect to acknowledge without operator hand-off.

SITE SURVEY

Noise-Floor Analysis — Electric Fence Site

A candidate site for an HF network deployment had an active electric livestock fence on the property. Kaizen was engaged to determine whether the site was viable and, if so, what remediation was required to make it so.

Analysis

Full HF spectrum noise-floor characterization from the intended antenna location, capturing the impulsive noise signature of the electric fence energizer across its firing cycle. Measured against statistical references to determine whether the observed noise floor would allow reliable HF operation at the frequencies of interest.

Fence-Line Walk-Down

Systematic walk of the full fence perimeter with a portable receiver and near-field probe, identifying and marking every section where improper bonding, corroded connections, damaged insulators, or vegetation contact was contributing measurably to the radiated noise. Localized problem sections rather than blanket-diagnosing the fence.

Deliverable

Written engineering report suitable for the site owner: measured noise-floor plots, per-section fence findings with photographs and coordinates, prioritized remediation list, and a defensible go/no-go recommendation for HF deployment at the site.
